A Stone That Holds Her Close - Sarah's Story

"I never thought a piece of jewellery could make me feel so close to her again."

Pendant worn at collarboneWhen Sarah first reached out to Harris Wood Creative Studio, she was still in the early, tender weeks of grief. Her mother, Margaret, had passed away after a long illness and Sarah was searching for something she couldn't quite name. Not just a keepsake. Something that felt alive with memory.

"I'd seen memorial jewellery online before," Sarah told me, "but it always felt a bit cold. Like a product. I wanted something that felt like it was made with love and gave me a sense of connection - because that's what Mum was all about."

The Beginning

Sarah chose a sterling silver heirloom pendant - a delicate crown point edged oval setting with a soft, milky resin stone made with a small delicate lock of her mother's hair. She sent it to me in a little envelope, tucked inside a handwritten note that simply said: "Please take care of her."

I read that note at my workbench in Bayles and held it for a moment before I began. It also held a photo of her mum - as I request that so I feel a connection to the person I am creating in memory of.

Every piece I create carries the weight of someone's love. But some pieces carry something extra - a quiet need for that connection, a tenderness that settles into the work itself. Sarah's pendant was one of those.

Eight Weeks Later

After the pendant arrived at Sarah's, she called me. I don't always get calls - most customers send a message or an email - but Sarah called.

She was crying. Happy tears, she assured me quickly. "It's her. It actually feels like her."

She told me she'd held the stone up to the light and watched the way it glowed - soft and warm, the way her mother's laugh had been. She said she put it on immediately and hasn't taken it off since.

"I will wear it to work. I will wear it to sleep. I will wear it to her grave on her birthday and I know she will know she is with me. Because she will be."

Why I Do This Work

Stories just like Sarah's are why I started Harris Wood Creative Studio. I know too well from experience that grief is one of the most isolating experiences a person can go through - and yet it is also one of the most universal. We all lose people we love at some stage and sometimes for some it happens more than once or twice. We all search for ways to keep them close.

Memorial jewellery isn't about holding onto the past. It's about carrying love forward into every ordinary Tuesday, every quiet morning, every moment when you reach up and touch the stone at your collarbone and remember.

If you're holding someone's memory and wondering if this is something you could do - it is. I'll take care of them. I promise.
